A tough turtle has had a lucky escape following a fire at an animal hospital in Burwood this evening.

Fire Rescue Victoria firefighters were called to the premises in Blackburn Road shortly before 7pm after multiple Triple Zero (000) calls alerting them to smoke billowing from the building.

Crews arrived on scene within six minutes to find flames issuing from the roof of the building.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

A lone turtle in a tank was the only patient inside the hospital at the time and wasn’t harmed during the incident. Fortunately, no staff or people were present.

The fire was deemed under control by about 7.30pm.

The hospital was extensively damaged by fire and smoke and a building surveyor will attend to assess the structural integrity of the building.

FRV firefighters will remain on scene to ensure the fire is fully extinguished and safe.

FRV Fire Investigators will attend to investigate the cause of the incident.
