BBQ safety

FRV firefighters attend dozens of avoidable barbecue fires every year.

It is quick and easy to make your barbecue safe.

Call Triple Zero (000) if a barbecue catches fire. If it is safe to do so, turn off the gas at the meter or cylinder.

Know the drill before you grill. Before using a barbecue you must:

CHECK
  • Check the LPG cylinder before you turn it on. Do not refill or use a LPG cylinder if it is damaged, or if a licensed gasfitter has not tested it in more than ten years.
  • Check the hose has not deteriorated, and
  • Check the connections every time – make sure they are tight and the O rings are not cracked or split.
TEST
  • Test the connection to the gas cylinder every time you connect it by spraying with soapy water. Bubbles will form if gas is escaping.
  • If you’ve got any doubts, do not use the barbeque. Turn off the gas and replace the connection, or contact a licensed gasfitter.
USE
  • Only use a barbecue outside in a clear space (never indoors or in a confined area).
  • Ensure one metre of space between a barbecue and a wall, fence, and other property.
  • Use barbecue utensils and an apron to protect against oil and burns.
  • Never leave a barbecue unattended, and
  • Avoid using a barbecue in windy conditions – burners may blow out and put you at risk of a gas leak.
CLEAN
  • Clean the barbecue and remove the excess fat after each use.
EXCHANGE
  • Only swap or buy LPG cylinders at a reputable supplier.
